Sleep and Mental Health

Sleep and mental health are intimately linked. We all know that after a sleepless night we can feel a bit tired and irritable, but most of us can bounce back after a good night’s sleep. People who suffer from chronic sleep problems have more difficulty recognising and managing emotions, and are at double the risk of developing depression.

Get Outside!

Studies show that going outside each day has massive health benefits. Improving your short term memory, reduce stress, restore mental energy, improve concentration & increase vitamin D. So, what are you waiting for? Get Outside!

Laughter is indeed the best medicine

It can relieve stress, boost your immune function, ease pain, burn calories, and improve your mood. To bring more laughter in your life, indulge in funny activities such as watching funny movies, being with funny people, and spend time with kids!

Benefits of Exercise

Exercise releases feel-good endorphins and it’s a hard feeling to beat. Twenty minutes of exercise a day or three to four hours per week is what you should be aiming for at the very least. If you’re in an exercise slump, consider ways to change your routine around. Find a fit buddy to motivate you to make those early morning classes, or go for a run or a brisk walk at lunchtime. You’ll get some time out of the office and work up a sweat. Winning!

Falls Prevention

Falls are an ominous yet very real part of life for people over 65 and many falls can be prevented once the causes are determined. Over 400 risk factors leading to falling have been identified including lack of physical activity resulting in loss of muscle tone, decreased bone mass, poor balance, and reduced flexibility; impaired vision, medications, disease including Parkinson’s, dementia, stroke and arthritis, surgery, and environmental hazards.

Posture

Your posture, how you align your body and use your muscles to keep you in certain positions, is an important consideration in every activity you do including sitting, standing and sleeping.

Towards Wellness

Lets go Fly a Kite…Why not try a spot of kite-flying? As well as the obvious physical and mental health benefits from exercising in the open air, you’ll be giving your eyes a workout. Focusing on distant objects makes a welcome change from staring at a screen for hours on end. It lessens the strain – and helps prevent age-related myopia – by relaxing the eye muscles. All together now: ‘Let’s go fly a kite’…
