Shoulder Pendular Exercises for Gentle Shoulder Rehabilitation

Pendular exercises are one of the simplest and most accessible forms of shoulder rehabilitation. They’re ideal for individuals recovering from shoulder surgery or dealing with acute shoulder injuries, as they allow movement without putting stress on the joint.

How to Perform Shoulder Pendular Exercises

These gentle swinging movements help to maintain joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and promote circulation – all while minimising strain. To perform pendular exercises, lean forward slightly and allow the affected arm to hang freely. Use small, controlled movements to gently swing the arm in a circular or side-to-side motion. Avoid large or fast movements that may irritate the shoulder.

How Often Should You Do Shoulder Pendular Exercises?

Depending on your level of pain and irritability, pendular exercises can be performed 2–5 times per day. Start slow and increase frequency as tolerated.

This foundational shoulder exercise is often recommended in the early stages of recovery, making it a safe and effective option for most people beginning their rehab journey.
